Fred dibnah used put log holes when doing chimneys goes to show steeple jack was using the same technique! up to the early and mid 20th century

I've got a book written by John Ivory who was a Cathedral Mason, it tells a lovely story about the cross on top of the Chapter house and a letter found within it during restoration works.
