@yourpelvicpt: Do you pee your pants when you sneeze or cough? This is called stress incontinence! Stress incontinence is due to the pelvic floors inability to manage downward pressure from the abdomen. Things like coughing, sneezing, jumping, etc. will cause this downward pressure and can cause the bladder to leak urine. We instruct our patients in a technique called “the knack,” which is when you tighten/lift the pelvic floor like you’re trying to stop urine from coming out (also known as a kegel). This prepares the pelvic floor and bladder for that downward pressure to reduce urine leakage. Another tip is to drive your hips back as you sneeze. Doing this helps manage the pressure in the abdomen and engage your lower core to assist the knack. Try this next time you feel a sneeze coming on! #pelvicfloor #incontinence #womenshealth #pelvichealth #fyp #pregnancy #postpartum #pelvicfloorphysicaltherapy
