It depends on your state. NSW has made their trading laws stricter for this year. Also some businesses operate even when they’re not supposed to. Unless someone reports them, they won’t get ‘caught’.

It's not illegal, it depends on the size of the business. I think businesses that employ over 100 staff aren't able to open before 1pm, that's why you also see cafes and the like open 😊

My local gym is 24/7, it’s unstaffed on Anzac Day. So it’s up to the individual if they go in. NSW here 💕

In Victoria I believe these type of public holidays (Good Friday, Christmas Day and Anzac Day before 1pm) business with less than 20 employees are allowed to open.

I think it’s partly to do with the awards? I’m a manager in retail and I’ll be honestly we’d much rather be closed the whole day. The amount of abuse we cop for not being open is intense

I live in a little town, our pubs are closed but places like iga and cafes still open. however I'm not actually sure if it's just because if it's what keeps our town alive🤷♀️

It was originally based around booze i believe. Like the bottle-o and civilian pics couldn’t open till lunch but the RSLs could allow for commemorative activities. 2up etc.

I think if the business opens they get a fine and thr business decides whether they'll make more money opening than they lose through fines or being closed if that makes sense.

Because really at the end of the day these small businesses have to still pay rent and wages so they open , all these public holidays someone has to fund them and the government isn’t helping so open they will..
