When you only have 20k men, sending 2k to die for one battle win, doesn’t seem very efficient in a long drawn out war. Especially when any reinforcements would take a long time to travel through the north

Not a smaller portion. Robb took most of the chavalry, aprox. 6000 men and Roose Bolton marched towords Tywin with aprox. 17-18k men. Also, the plan was for Roose to avoid a confruntation with Tywin.
