@drbotyler: This is hyper or constant checking in is a recurrent pattern I see in the neurodivergent couples I work with where one or both partners has Autism and/or AuDHD and trauma from childhood related to needs suppression and/or hypervigalence from being harshly punished. It is always meant well but it often ends up retraumatizing one or both partners because it actually inhibits taking their partner at their word, allowing them to unmask, and ultimately building trust. #autism #audhd #autistic #adhd #traumahealing #couples #autisticadult #autismawareness #hypervigilance #cptsd #cptsdawareness #cptsdrecovery #neurodivergent #neurospicy

AuDHD who was responsible for regulating my undiagnosed parent. Consciously I know my AuDHD partner’s dysregulation is not my responsibility, but I still feel so anxious and afraid every time 🥲

My adhd partner has trouble regulating their own emotions, I've started withdrawing until they actually come and ask me for help/comfort/an ear, ect. Its definitely helped with people pleasing

"do you want to vent/talk, space/quiet (if i cant give space like in the car), or advice/reassurance?" (insert the slashed words according to issue). if they pick space/quiet remind them you are there

this may work for a large number of people but I find that making blanket statements or assumptions can be a slippery slope. if you have effective communication with each other or at least genuine intentions to do so. then there's no reason to play these kinds of head games of "checking in less".

Been trying to do this and self soothe. Also other than just saying are you okay, I ask what I think more specifically might be going on, usually it's just sensory discomfort.

my nervous system refuses to listen to me if I tell it that my partner isn't upset because of me. my body immediately forgets and defaults to feeling like I've done something wrong and need to adjust.

Also with the right person it doesn't matter how many times you check in. And in majority cases we simply are with wrong people.

I check in because I can't tell what they're feeling. I'm actually asking what they're feeling, so I know, not always to change it

this is so smart, I’ve definitely been in this pattern before as the person reassuring and felt like there wasn’t room for me to show my feelings out of fear of dysregulating the other person

I’m glad our trauma was the first thing my husband and I worked on while dating. That, coupled with individual therapy and medication, has allowed us to become a healthy unit.

just a piece of genuine constructive feedback: autism isn't a mental health condition. very good advice though!

Co regulating is different than checking in. Why would you put them in the same category?
