@globalelephants: It’s been one week since the world watched Pupy take her magical first steps into her new life. Many of our supporters watched our live streams all day. Pupy would reach out with her trunk as far as she could, exploring her surroundings from the comfort of her crate. She would rush forward, and we would all hold our breaths as she dangled one foot over the soil. Then she would pull it back, and retreat to the back of her crate. As the evening approached, she got more confident and began to rush forward even quicker and her dangling toes would come even closer to the ground. We saw determination in her posture and expression, and we knew that she was getting close. When the sun began to go down, the teams decided to change their approach. In a way, they became more in tune with the feeling of night at the sanctuary – calm, steady, but energized. They moved away from Pupy and began celebrating a caregiver’s birthday. But, as they sang to Leo, Pupy began to look confident. The party increased the energy in their singing and sang “happy birthday” in Spanish, English, and Portuguese. The gate to her crate had been open for about 7 and a half hours before she finally placed her front legs onto the ground to the sound of clapping and cheering. She still looked a little unsure when she brought her back legs down, but she quickly began to look more relaxed. When the live stream said goodnight to Pupy, she was calm and content. Looking back, it’s magical to see the evolving energy of Pupy, her caregivers, and those who were there to support her. Some moments seemed soft and relaxed, and others became almost electric. It was beautiful to hear the love and intention in her team’s singing and to see how Pupy gained the last bit of confidence that she needed to take that step. It was also so special to be able to see and feel the love and energy from our supporters who were watching from around the world. As Scott said in the live, we really could not do this without you. Pupy’s first step was the culmination of thousands of people working together to create a better world for elephants.
