Placing it on the side is actually a great idea that works with a lot of desks and laptops. i have a gaming laptop that does connect with a single thunderbolt port. It requires so many connections which is difficult to handle if it's under the table. But if it's on the side, I can easily reach all the ports and even quickly turn the laptop on/ off if I wanted to. Hidden yet fully functional
