The Hong Kong protests a few years ago certainly didn't paint China in a good light.

I remember watching the HK police against the umbrella protestors, and they would literally raise big signs to tell the protestors what they will be doing next. I thought, who does this?! This is so civilised. Are mainland police similar?

There are few people in the West who understand China's grassroots government as well as you do.👍

And what about Hong Kong protests? I'm curious about your perspective about that particular situation. Cheers!

i think the reason why chinese people dont protest massively and violently is that reporting problems to authorities would solve the problem much more efficiently

Actually, decentralised governance works way more effectively and efficiently when it comes to local matters and issues. We the west could learn a lot from China.

As a hypothetical: what do you think would happen to someone protesting the "re-education" of Uyghurs in Xinjiang and demanding they be left in peace?

I keep trying to explain to people that our right to vote is just hiding how little power we have and the CCP doesn’t legitimacy that way, they get that by representing the citizens and trying to balance citizens and corporate needs. Which is what our governments pretend they’re doing when they’re selling our future to huge multinationals

Chinese don't believe in chaos and thinks that democracy can be manipulated to the benefits of super wealthy. That's why they prefer to have a different kind of agreement with their government. Most of times they trust the government doing the right thing. Only when severe mistakes by the government are perceived do they engage in protests. And contrary to US, those protests actually work (e.g. stoping the pandemic lockdown).

Doesn't decentralising protest management allow the central government to place disapproval of local authorities instead of central? What happens if the local govt doesn't crack down?

The little that I know of Chinese protests during covid suggested the government gave the protesters exactly what they asked for. not exactly in line with Western propaganda models

it's shocking how effectively the western media can shift the narrative. they used to report on how there were 50k protests per year and social instability was a major challenge. suddenly they're rare

My issue with the Chinese version is the government taking over all labor unions and limiting collective bargaining. One may argue that unions failed in the West, but that’s a different topic.

🙏🙏🙏 and I believe that wages have risen and exceeded the US (in PPP) because of protest being dealt with as you describe, while those in the west have fallen. Consider that without that protest,
