The fact that cbt is considered the gold standard when SO MANY people have said it traumatizes and hurts them makes me feel like many therapists don't rly care about patient wellbeing at their core...

Clinicians forget CBT was very controversial and was slow to be accepted as legitimate. Psychotherapists have always been resistant to change

such a tough spot to be in. practicioners will always be ahead of the research, but most ppl wait for permission/validation from the research & regulatory agencies before using certain approaches.

I work with kids and it's rough trying to tell folks a kid isn't ready to delve into their trauma because they can't function in their own bodies/environments.

I dont think a lot of people outside of this specialty truly understand the history of the APA. how until incredibly recently it was an old white mens club and did not have patient care as a priority

As a neurodivergent, bottom up thinking is how my brain works. Your advocacy has done more than you may realize!

As a cptsd battling neurodivergent. I - dispiiiiise- CBT. I’m not comfortable deconstructing my resume right now, but bet I’ll be looking into this. Thank you.

The last part is the takeaway. You have been advocating these therapies for years because they work. People who want to follow rules are going to do that even in the face of overwhelming evidence.

the trauma world has been advocating for these therapies for 40 years; trauma treatment is continually acknowledged and then "forgotten"

I think it's really weird how people think healing is a science. Like, that "standard" doesn't exist. If a therapy works for someone it works for them.

Oh dear…therapist of 30 years. Spent 2 full days in march on a specialized EMDR training and 2 full days in April on EMDR & IFS and not once was this therapy mentioned. Hmmm

I’m an occupational therapist in mental health and we’ve always been taught to tailor what we’re doing to the individual. So a lot of techniques related to bottom up therapy and also some CBT/DBT/ACT

It’s about damn time. I also wonder if they’re doing this because of AI and its likelihood to replace top-down practicing therapists

Yea bc I was in CBT DBT therapy for years for ED etc. and when I was like “hey this is not working” they told me I was too lazy and not doing my homework

cbt just made me feel gaslit and made me way more disconnected from my emotions tbh. idk how it’s considered legitimate or helpful.

I think this is going to be particularly important in the coming years with what seems to be pretty significant changes in the world and how people relate to each other

Something needs to change. Not all therapy types help all people. Bottom up therapy helped me and as a trauma steward it’s what I use to help other people

CBT did nothing for me. Bottom up therapy was the only way I was able to gain peace and start healing

This is great to hear. I have a nice variety of MH conditions and CBT has never worked in the slightest for any of them. I feel like I’m being gaslit when therapists use CBT with me.

I actively talk sh*t about CBT and will continue to do so. it's lazy, ineffective, and re-traumatizes people who don't want to re-live their issues by gaslighting themselves about it 😁

also, this news functions as a way of further legitimizing itself even though it inherently exists in a liminal space (between what research eventually shows is happening in human experiences)

In undergrad they told us research is 10-20 years (YEARS) behind whats happening irl in the therapy room

I would just like to say that modern day CBT doesn’t look like times of past. It does include the body.

Yes!!! Practicing folks’ experiences should be where research questions come from, so practice will always be ahead of research!!
