What gets me is that it's not just that each word has a different meaning for each tone, but that the same word and same tone can mean wildly different things very frequently.

i dont get why ppl think tonemes are like optional. they pack as much information as any other phoneme. You wouldnt learn a language and ignore voicing or vowel height or anything like that

I think what throws people off is at some levels/situations it is less important because what one is saying is predictable, but when you want to say something that isn't obvious it becomes important.

汉字其实最重要的是对于前后文的理解，就是当你不太懂某一个单词的时候，你可以从它前面和后面去揣测它的意思，所以汉语的入门是很难的，但当你度过最难的阶段之后，其实你会发现，哪怕是最高深的学术论文，你也能去了解他的意思。

I agree and disagree 😅 context and cadence will get you 90% there! Trying to be so conscious of tones will knock off your cadence and in the end make it harder to understand. So don’t worry too much!
