1) My great grandfather was like 17-19 when he participated in the Easter Rising in 1916. He was then arrested and was going to be executed for treason. But somehow they found out (and had proof) that he was born in America, therefore making him an American citizen. This was in the middle of WW1 so ig the British didn’t want to execute an American (especially a young kid) so they just let him go and told him to go back to America. And so he did.

When my grandfather was 16 he had to flee the country. His mother sent him to Ireland to stay with relatives. When he was 18 he came back to the U.S and immediately joined the army. He ended up being stationed back in Europe. So from the age of 16 to mid twenties he was barely in the U.S. Many years later, when my dad found out about this, he asked him why he had to flee the country. My grandfather simply said, “you don’t need to know about that”. And refused to elaborate. My grandfather died a few years ago and took that secret to his grave. He was the youngest in his family so everyone else who might’ve known something is dead too. We don’t know what happened and we likely will never know.
