Domestic violence and strangulation. Twenty-seven years ago, I survived a night I will never forget. For all these years, I shared this story only with my children and family. Today, I’m sharing it because one woman may need to know she isn’t alone. I was a young mother of two, married to an abusive man. Long before that night, I lived on eggshells. I never knew which version of my husband would come home. Happy or angry? Sober or intoxicated? Would he be loving, or would I become the target of his anger? I watched for signals. I measured my words. I tried to figure out how to act so I could keep the peace. Living that way teaches you to pay attention to someone else’s mood before you even acknowledge your own needs. In front of others, he could play the nice guy. Behind closed doors, I lived with someone they didn’t see. Abuse can slowly make you question yourself. Maybe I provoked him. Maybe it was my fault. Maybe I deserved it. Maybe I’m too weak to leave. Years of manipulation and intimidation can make those thoughts feel like truth. You become isolated inside a life that other people may think looks perfectly normal. Then came the night I almost didn’t survive. I was asleep, just one room away from my sleeping toddlers, when I woke to my husband’s hands around my throat. I struggled for my life. As I felt myself slipping away, I saw my babies’ faces. By the grace of God, I found the strength to fight back and get away. I speak about this night because I was seconds away from death. But there were so many other terrifying moments before it. The police were called. He was arrested. Less than five days later, he was released with a “time served” deal. I did not feel protected by the system that should have stood up for me. I feared for my children and myself, so I fled across the country to keep us safe. Leaving took courage, but it also brought guilt. Taking your children away from their father can break your heart—even when you know you are protecting them. I had to make the safest choice I could while carrying fear, grief, and uncertainty. My family stepped up. Their love and support helped me get out of that marriage and begin again. I will never forget the people who helped make safety possible for me and my babies. I’m not sharing this for sympathy. I’m sharing it for the woman who is quietly living this right now. The one watching his face, choosing every word carefully, and wondering if anyone would believe her. I want you to hear this: You did not cause his abuse. You did not deserve it. Struggling to leave does not make you weak. You deserve safety, support, and a life where you can breathe. What I lived through helped shape the life coach I am today. My understanding reaches beyond books. It comes from lived experience—from fear, survival, starting over, and learning to trust myself again. Every woman’s story is different. I would never assume I know every part of yours. But I know how lonely it can feel, and I want my voice to help someone feel less alone. For 27 years, I kept this story close. Today, I’m letting it be heard. 💜 U.S. National Domestic Violence Hotline: 📞 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) 💬 Text START to 88788 🌐 thehotline.org #DomesticViolenceAwareness #SurvivorStory #YouAreNotAlone #GroundedWellnessByCorrie
