I waited until I was financially independent to come out to my dad. He supported me through school and always pushed me to be better academically and professionally. He is a man who always puts family first. He taught me 3 important values that I still believe in now: to try my best, to be disciplined, and to put family first- just like he always did. As the sole breadwinner of our family, he not only financially supported a family of 5 on his own, but also somehow found the energy to work multiple jobs so he could send money back home to his brother and parents as well. But he was not always the most supportive personally. He cared a lot about his reputation. Growing up, I heard a lot of “gay is unnatural” comments from him. This opinion was closed for discussion. And I don’t blame him- he grew up poor, in a village in rural china. He had probably never seen a gay/queer person in his life, not even on TV. As I got older, I realized I had learned a lot of internalized homophobia from my family. Deep down, I always knew- I liked girls. But I was SO afraid of saying it out loud. I didn’t even tell my friends. Because whatever came afterwards…was completely unknown. It was terrifying. So when I finally came out to my dad, it was to tell him I had fallen in love with my wife, Madi. To my surprise, he took it well. He actually said, “if you can find love, that’s all that matters.” I remember crying tears of relief. My dad always taught me to put family first, and I love my family so much. I didn’t want to do anything to disappoint them. I will say, my dad is far from perfect. But he made it a point to fly from Hong Kong to the US for my wedding, to be happy for me, and to treat Madi like a member of the family. I’ll always be grateful to my dad, for seeing me for who I really was, and not feeling like he had to turn away. He is a man who always puts family first. Side note, crazy to think no one knew I was gay from the last pic…closet was glass😭😭 #wlw #weddingday #wuhluhwuh #gaytiktok #lgbtq
