Last night’s board meeting was another example of why so many community members are frustrated. The meeting began approximately 30 minutes late. Then, instead of using the microphones they normally use, the board spoke so quietly that many people in the audience couldn’t hear what was being said. Multiple residents respectfully asked if they could please speak louder. The response? We were told it wasn’t their problem and that if we didn’t like it, we could leave. Think about that for a moment. A public meeting is supposed to be for the public. The purpose of New York’s Open Meetings Law is to ensure government business is conducted openly so the public can observe and understand what is happening. If the audience can’t hear the discussion, meaningful public access is lost. To make matters worse, there were moments when the board laughed loudly enough for everyone to hear, but not the actual discussion the public came to listen to. During the meeting, one board member also stated they had called “my lawyer,” rather than referring to the district’s attorney, which left many attendees with additional questions. This isn’t about politics. It’s about transparency, respect, and accountability. Residents should never have to choose between sitting through a meeting they can’t hear or being told to leave because they asked officials to speak up.
