The house felt quieter than usual without Engfa’s laughter echoing down the hallway. Charlotte lay on their bed in the late morning light. Engfa had left before sunrise for another long day of shooting Murder in the Kitchen—the historical suspense series where she played the lead. Down the hall, soft giggles mixed with the clatter of toys. Ching-Ching, their daughter, sat cross-legged on her bedroom floor, lining up plastic animals in neat rows. She looked up the moment Charlotte appeared in the doorway. “Sweetheart,” Charlotte said gently, leaning against the frame, “let’s go visit your Dada. Change your clothes first. I’ll wait for you downstairs.” Ching-Ching’s face lit up like someone had switched on the sun. “Yessssss! Okay, Mommy, I’ll change now!” She scrambled to her feet and dashed to the wardrobe, already humming under her breath. Twenty minutes later they were in Charlotte’s gray Audi. Ching-Ching sat in the passenger seat, seatbelt snug, swinging her legs and humming her favorite song at full volume. Charlotte glanced over and felt her own smile rise without effort. The little girl looked so much like Engfa when she was this happy—same bright eyes, same stubborn tilt of the chin. When they arrived, the crew recognized them immediately. Engfa’s manager and her assistant, P’Sun, waved them over with warm greetings and guided them to a sofa set just off the main shooting area. Engfa finished her final take and turned toward the monitors. That was when she saw them. Her whole face changed—surprise first, then pure delight. She crossed the set in a few long strides, and scooped Ching-Ching up into her arms. “My baby,” she murmured, pressing kisses to both of the girl’s cheeks. Ching-Ching squealed and wrapped her small arms around Engfa’s neck. Then Engfa turned to Charlotte, one arm still holding their daughter, and pulled her close. Their lips met in a soft, lingering kiss. “You two can’t really last a day without seeing me, hmmm?” Engfa teased, eyes sparkling. Charlotte rested her forehead against her wife’s for a second. “We love you so much, so we wanted to see you every day.” “Yes, Mommy’s right,” Ching-Ching added firmly, nodding against Engfa’s shoulder. Engfa’s soft laugh filled the small space between them. They moved back to the sofa. Ching-Ching climbed onto the cushions behind her Dada and began carefully massaging Engfa’s shoulders with tiny, determined hands. Charlotte sat on the floor near Engfa’s legs. Without a word, Engfa stretched one leg across Charlotte’s lap. Charlotte’s fingers immediately found the tense muscles and worked them gently, thumbs pressing slow circles into the calf. Engfa reached for her phone. First she snapped a picture of Ching-Ching’s concentrated face as the little girl kept kneading. Then she pulled Charlotte closer so the three of them filled the frame. Charlotte leaned in and kissed Engfa’s cheek for the last shot. When the final scenes of the day wrapped, Engfa changed out of costume and met them at the car. They drove to a small outdoor restaurant Engfa loved, the kind with wooden tables under string lights. Ching-Ching ordered her usual and talked nonstop about the toys she had brought to show Dada later. Charlotte rested her hand on Engfa’s thigh under the table while they ate, quiet and content. By the time they reached home the sky had turned soft purple. Ching-Ching fell asleep halfway through a bedtime story. Charlotte and Engfa stood in the doorway of their daughter’s room for a long moment. “Thank you for coming,” Engfa whispered, fingers linked with Charlotte’s. Charlotte squeezed back. “We missed you. That’s all.” Engfa smiled, the tired lines around her eyes softening. “Next time I’ll try to finish earlier. Or maybe you two should just move onto the set with me.” Charlotte laughed under her breath and pulled her wife toward their own bedroom. The house no longer felt quiet. It felt full again—full of the three of them, exactly the way it was supposed to be. #gl #🌈 #au #englot
