@sarahthecloserparvin: I grow giant bluegills in North Alabama. Why? I want to see how far the bluegill can go with the right conditions. Most pondowners in the South, want trophy bass. We love them too and for years we grew them. We had a major fish kill that left us with a very unique opportunity to do something a little different and we grabbed ahold of it and ran with it! I realize a majority of people don’t know what it takes to manage water, produce a high density of trophy fish or a lot of pond management basics. I didn’t know either but I’ve spent the last 6 years becoming a guru at growing these monsters. I don’t gatekeep and I’m happy to share what we’ve learned. Most of our lessons came the hard way and there was a steep learning curve with our project but my dad an I do not give up. I get asked a lot of questions and I’m going to answer the most popular ones here: We do not use any form of steroids. These fish are extremely well taken care of. This management is 24/7/365. We pellet feed (Endurance Feeds- used to be Optimal feed) and they have naturally occurring forage as well. These are Coppernose Bluegill, a subspecies of bluegill. They are not hybrids and they will spawn 5-7 times a year. We have to harvest hundreds of pounds of fish throughout the year to ensure we don’t become overcrowded. We keep more parental male bluegills than females in our water. We do eat smaller fish and they are delicious. Coppernose have a cold limit and may not thrive in colder climates. I do offer guided fishing trips here (wait-listed until Fall 2026) I do not have a PHD or any formal education about pond management but I do have years of ‘hands on’ experience and thousands of hours of research under my belt. Any other questions, just ask. #bluegill
Our Bluegill in central Illinois can't be the same type. A good bluegill here is 8 plus inches and half to 3/4s of a lb.
