November 3rd - Saint of the Day: Saint Martin de Porres, Barber, Surgeon & Dominican Lay Brother His baptismal record said "father unknown." The law said he couldn't join a religious order because of his race. So he knocked on the Dominicans' door and asked for the lowest job in the house. Then heaven started showing off. Witnesses swore under oath they saw him in Mexico, Africa, China, and Japan... while he never once left Lima, Peru. He put a dying beggar in his own bed. When a brother complained, he said: "Compassion, my dear Brother, is preferable to cleanliness." When his convent went broke, he offered a solution: "Sell me." Even the animals obeyed him. There's a reason his statues show a dog, a cat, and a mouse eating from the same dish. Meet Saint Martin de Porres, the first Black saint of the Americas and proof that God builds His greatest saints from the people the world throws away.
