Let's make that statisic more specific. If you look at gym goers who have been working out for over 2 years and are male then pretty much everyone is benching 225 for reps.

Unpopular opinion. The smith provides lateral stabilization which makes it easier to bench 225 than just a straight bench. So, no, IMO it doesn’t count as the same lift.

Unless you put 3 plates of 45 = to free weights 225

Isn’t body weight more important? When younger I was 155 benching 185 - now at 63 I’m starting over - reps of 125 but improving

I don't know, I see plenty of people benching 225 for 6 to 8 reps at my gym, some of them are smaller than me, like under 200 lb

For me, 2 plates each side with free weights is more difficult to lift than the same thing on a Smith machine. Cable tension settings matter as well.

I do 225 for 2 reps on smith, but max at 205 for 1 rep on free weights bench machine 😏

2 -45 plates and 2-10 plates is equal… most smiths are either 25 or 35 lbs. So add tens on each side and you’re good. On incline this is good oversll

So smith machine removed stability muscles making it easier than a free lift. Not by much I’d imagine but not sure how you would measure that

You can still make progress on a smith machine, but any numbers on there mean nothing. The machine does some of the work for you

I use the smith machine for incline bench and its helped me grow my chest. I can go as slow as possible to really focus on the negative and not need a spotter.

Most likely 3% of dudes can bench 225 the first time they lift would be more accurate

No way only 3 percent in gym goers. I’d say 40 percent of Gym goers do 225
