@thefoodiegr: Do you remember this All-American Diner in Rockford, Michigan? Rosie’s Diner: A Beloved Icon on the Move In the golden age of American diners, one name glistened brighter than most—Rosie’s Diner. From its humble beginnings in 1946 as the Silver Dollar Diner in Little Ferry, New Jersey, to its cinematic fame and ultimate relocation to Michigan, Rosie’s story is as rich and layered as the pies once served at its counter. Crafted by the Paramount Dining Car Company, the original structure opened along U.S. Route 46 and quickly earned a loyal following. But its destiny changed in the 1970s, when a series of Bounty paper towel commercials catapulted the diner to national fame. It was in those iconic ads that “Rosie the Waitress,” played by the indelible Nancy Walker, wiped away spills with the "quicker picker-upper," endearing herself—and the diner—to millions. The Silver Dollar Diner was renamed Rosie’s in her honor, and a piece of American pop culture was born. Despite its fame, Rosie’s Diner eventually faced an uncertain future. When the Corrado family—who had operated the diner for decades—sold the land in the late '80s, the future of the chrome-plated classic seemed bleak. But then came Jerry Berta, a Michigan-based artist known for his ceramic diner sculptures. Enchanted by Rosie's legacy, Berta purchased the diner for just $10,000 and had it transported to Rockford, Michigan, in 1990. The journey was nothing short of monumental: crews sawed the diner in half to fit it onto trucks and reassembled it in its new home. Under Berta’s vision, Rosie’s became the heart of Dinerland USA, a whimsical destination featuring three classic diners, an art gallery, and even a food-themed mini-golf course. The nostalgia-soaked atmosphere attracted tourists and locals alike, and Rosie’s found new life as both a functioning restaurant and a living museum of Americana. Ownership changed again in 2006, when Jonelle and Randy Roest took the reins. They transformed the site further, introducing a sports bar and an ice cream parlor. Rosie’s Diner even garnered national attention once more, appearing on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and Diner Paradise. Yet, despite its fame and fondness, Rosie’s shuttered its doors in 2011. But the story doesn’t end there. In a heartwarming twist, Rosie’s was acquired in 2023 by Dawn Perry and her husband, who have set their sights on restoring the diner to its original 1940s charm. They plan to relocate the building to central Missouri, between Columbia and Fulton, with a full renovation already underway. The couple aims to reopen Rosie’s within two to three years, serving up a classic American menu with handmade milkshakes and homestyle favorites. A delightful touch will be the Vinny’s Kids Menu, named after their youngest son—a fitting tribute in a story rich with family ties and heartfelt nostalgia.
