The data from the DVD is read on the surface of the disc by a laser. DVD media was developed by Philips, Sony, Toshiba and Panasonic. In December 1995, ten video manufacturers announced their agreement on a common standard. The first DVD players were marketed in Japan at the end of 1996, at the beginning of 1997 in the United States and at the beginning of 1998 in France.
