Known as a "reversible lane" or "tidal flow lane," this system allows traffic controllers to change the direction of a central lane depending on peak-hour flow. Morning gridlock heading into the city? Flip the lane inbound. Evening rush out of town? Switch it the other way. It's a simple but effective fix in major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, where population density and car ownership have exploded. Overhead signs, traffic lights, and sometimes even retractable barriers are used to direct the flow. It's fast, it's flexible, and it makes Western road planning look like it's stuck in first gear.
