Arok Thon Arok أروك طون أروك He was born in Kongor village, Twic East County, Jonglei State, in 1944. Arok was a South Sudanese military intelligence officer and politician. He graduated from the Sudanese Military College and served as an intelligence officer in various locations in Sudan, including Khartoum and Juba. He was very fluent in English and Arabic. Commander Arok was one of the five founders of the SPLA in 1983. Although he was senior in military rank to William Nyuon and Salva Kiir, he was placed fifth in the high command of the SPLA because he belonged to the same area as Commander John Garang, the leader of the SPLM-A. He was assigned the roles of Deputy Chief of Staff for Administration and Logistics. He visited Libya in 1984 with other SPLA commanders to bring arms to the movement. His wife died in England in 1987, and Arok went to England in 1988 to place his children in school. However, rumours spread that Arok was in negotiations with the Sudanese government. These allegations convinced Dr. Garang to expel Arok from the SPLA/M. Arok was arrested and imprisoned along with Kerubino Kuanyin Bol. Arok left for Kampala after he was released from prison, and President Museveni placed him under house arrest in Uganda. In 1993, he joined the SPLM faction of Dr. Riek Machar in Nairobi after his release in Uganda. In 1997, Arok, Riek, and Kerubino signed the Khartoum Peace Agreement with the Sudanese government. Arok became the Secretary General of the United Democratic Front, a political party established by the South Sudanese factions that had signed the peace agreement with the Sudanese government in 1997. The UDF Party was led by Dr. Riek Machar Teny. On February 12, 1998, Commander Arok Thon Arok died in a Sudanese military plane that crashed in the town of Nasir, Upper Nile State. The First Vice President of Sudan, 1st Lt. Gen. Zubair Mohammed Salih, and other Sudanese military officers and politicians died in the plane crash on the Sobat River. Others survived the crash; among them were Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin and the Sudanese Major General Dr. Ibrahim Mohamed Khair. Commander Arok Thon Arok was a great liberator who dedicated his life to achieving the aspirations of the people of South Sudan.
