In 1994, I worked at a supermarket. A lady threatened to slap a cashier’s face because she refused to cash a check without ID. It was policy. The manager kept apologizing as she Karen kept sayin it.

I literally was told that saying "that's just how the cookie crumbles" is rude when a customer was complaining about us being on 2 person coverage and she had to wait in line.

A grocery store by me trialed out having 1 line and a person directing people to the next available checker. I loved it because it went so quick but people complained because the line looked longer.

Ive always worked CS. Most times screaming and crying, throwing a temper tantrum get the customer "something". Because lower salaried managers have 5000 to do's left to handle on their 16th hour.

I worked in CS back in the 80’s, we had Karen’s, but not like we have today. One bought a nearly empty jar of jam back as it had gone mouldy, she had had it for over a year……

I worked retail in the late 80s and early 90s and the things people tried to return was astonishing. And we often returned it, but it got to the point where it was just out of control. Shoes that were disgusting years, old and sweaters that were raggedy. That’s why we have the rules we have now. People took advantage.

Actually (hyper fixation helps here!) - this was a thing even in the 30s/40s. Miep Gies was actually hired on intially as someone to handle the product complaints at Otto Frank’s business

I love how when the policy is there and they don’t like the policy it’s horrible customer service. Just because they don’t like resolution nor the policy does not negate the form of customer service they are receiving.

I forget where I saw it, but they uncovered a customer complaint on a tablet from ancient Rome or Greece. so customers have been unreasonable since recorded history 🤣🤬

There've always been customer service. As an example, the Walmart they built-in my town was pre. Smartphone and guess what they had when they first built it customer service desk.
