Napoleon Bonaparte is one of the most influential figures in French and European history. Born on August 15, 1769, in Corsica shortly after it became part of France, he grew up in a modest family of minor nobility. During the French Revolution, Napoleon took advantage of political upheaval to rise quickly through the ranks of the army. An exceptional strategist, he achieved several major victories, particularly during the Italian campaign, which made him popular with the public and influential among political leaders. In 1799, he seized power through a coup and became First Consul, before crowning himself emperor in 1804. As ruler of France, he introduced major reforms: he established the Napoleonic Code, which still influences French law today, reorganized the administration, reformed education, and strengthened state authority. Militarily, Napoleon sought to expand his influence across Europe. He won a series of victories against major powers, notably at the Battle of Austerlitz, often regarded as his greatest strategic achievement. However, his ambitions eventually led to a coalition of enemies. After the failure of the Russian campaign in 1812 and several defeats, he abdicated in 1814. Exiled to the island of Elba, he briefly returned to power in 1815 during the “Hundred Days,” before being definitively defeated at the Battle of Waterloo. He was then exiled to Saint Helena, where he died in 1821.
