Yet, historical records and scholarly works affirm this truth. One notable figure is Al-Aswad al-Ghundajani (d. circa 430 AH / 1038 CE), whose full name was Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-A’rabi. A distinguished scholar in Arabic literature and genealogy, he hailed from Ghundajan, a small town in Persia. Despite his Persian origins, he immersed himself deeply in Arab culture and traditions. Al-Ghundajani lived during a period when Arab identity was still closely tied to its original roots. He so thoroughly adopted the Arab way of life—mastering their poetry, language, and customs—that he was indistinguishable from them in behavior and speech. However, he went a step further in his quest for authenticity. As chronicled by Yaqut al-Hamawi in Mu’jam al-Udaba, Al-Ghundajani was known for darkening his skin with tar and sitting in the sun to achieve a complexion that matched the Arabs he so admired. This practice was part of his effort to earn the epithet “al-A’rabi” (the Bedouin Arab). Yaqut notes: “It is well-known that he used to darken his skin, applying tar and sitting in the sun to realize for himself the nickname ‘al-A’rabi.’” Al-Ghundajani’s dedication underscores the deep association between Arab identity and blackness during his time. His actions reflect a profound respect for Arab culture and a desire to fully embody it, even to the extent of altering his appearance. Through his life and work, Al-Ghundajani provides a compelling example of cultural assimilation and the historical perception of Arab identity. His story invites reflection on how cultural and racial identities were understood and expressed in the medieval Islamic world.
