In nursing school, we are taught to respect the patient’s room. While they are at the hospital, that is their room. We should be respectful of their space. Leaving supplies around for anyone to grab or not picking up after yourself is a huge no-no. It’s disgusting and disrespectful. It’s not hard to put extra supplies into a locked drawer in the room or on the designated counter. It’s also not hard to pick up after yourself. Throwing away the finished antibiotic line or gloves is simple compared to the majority of the nursing tasks. Things are chaotic on a med-surg floor. However, respect goes both ways for nurses and patients.

I hate to tell her, but a hospital, especially in the setting of adult care, is not a designated play place. It's not baby proof, and it never will be.

I have a genuine question. For those of us who don’t have a village, what am I supposed to do with my children if my husband is in the hospital? Truly I’m looking for a real solution as a mother…I don’t want to burden the hospital so what am I supposed to do?

We’ve had patients make literal shanks with leftover IV set-ups, so I understand where this mom is coming from. But these issues she has should require hospital execs to get more involved

I caught a small child digging in a biowaste bin with mom sitting by watching him. When I pointed it out she just shrugged her shoulders and went back to her phone. So yes, they do stop parenting.

I wouldn’t take a kid into a hospital. C-diff, VRE, a public Petri dish. Staff and families not washing hands, donning PPE - that unopened needle is a lot safer than the cooties running around there

I can tell you they don’t pay EVS nearly enough. Starting rate is $11/hr at my hospital & there are FAST FOOD places starting at $13-$14!! It’s crazy! And there are some things we can’t control. Scuffs on the wall, floor being scratched and scuffed, etc. we wish we could fix those things but our hospital isn’t gonna pay for that. On top of that, every room we clean is timed from the second the pt leaves and they want as many rooms turned over as fast as possible regardless of how dirty the room is. It’s all about what makes the hospital look good on the outside, the “data” of how fast we turn over rooms, not how clean they are…which is sad. I do my best to clean every room top to bottom but with my times being monitored I don’t always have time to inspect every inch of the wall and baseboards, etc. if theres an obvious stain or something I will of course clean it up. I’ve been EVS for almost 4 yrs and I’m one of the only ones left. Most have quit in the time I’ve been there. I’m thankful to work with good nurses, cnas, doctors, etc. who make me feel appreciated unlike the people I work for.
