@niu13kotas: The indigenous people of Bougainville wanted their own independence even before Papua New Guinea (PNG) gained independence in 1975 for several deep-rooted historical, cultural, and economic reasons: Ethnic and Cultural Distinctiveness: Bougainvilleans are ethnically, culturally, and linguistically distinct from the majority of PNG’s population. They are Melanesians with strong Polynesian traits, and many felt little cultural connection to mainland PNG. Geographical Isolation: Bougainville is geographically separate from the mainland, closer to the Solomon Islands than to Port Moresby. This isolation reinforced their sense of being a distinct entity, both physically and politically. Exploitation and Inequity in Economic Development: The Panguna copper mine, one of the largest in the world at the time, was developed by the Australian colonial administration without meaningful consultation with local landowners. Though it generated enormous revenue, most of the profits went to the Australian government and later to the central PNG government and foreign companies, while Bougainvilleans saw little benefit and bore the environmental and social costs. Fear of Marginalization in a New Nation: As PNG moved toward independence, many Bougainvilleans feared they would be politically and economically marginalized in the new nation, dominated by larger mainland populations. Desire for Self-Determination: In line with broader global decolonization movements, Bougainvilleans aspired to govern themselves and control their own resources and affairs. Their 1973 submission clearly reflected these desires. Despite their demands, the PNG government granted only Provincial Government status, which many saw as an insufficient compromise—essentially a continuation of local colonial governance under a new national structure. This dissatisfaction would later lead to the Bougainville Civil War (1988–1998) and ultimately the 2019 independence referendum, where 97.7% voted in favor of independence. #PapuaNewGovernment #AutonomousBougainvilleGoverment #Independence

Alot of Provinces in PNG are freeloaders. Autonomy alone will expose freeloaders.
