@yuvaltheterrible: To be clear when I say “the writers” I mean Neil Druckman and Halley Gross, and decidedly not Craig Mazin #thelastofus

Mr Positivity :
Saying the cure couldn’t have happened diminishes Joel’s autonomy and reduces his choice down to just saving Ellie.

I think ppl don’t want to grapple with the fact that Joel made a selfish choice. Like because we also want Ellie to live they want it to be the Right™️decision.

It’s not even that you have to believe it would have worked because “The fireflies would have distributed it right/the treatment was effective etc.” You just have to understand that that was all JOEL and ELLIE understood. It doesn’t matter if “oh we can’t actually know it was going to work, so Joel did the right thing” is a shallow analysis because the semantics weren’t relevant to Joel when he made the decision, for all he knew it WAS going to work. The game isn’t trying to make US think it would work, it’s just trying to be clear that we have to treat Joel’s decisions as if the cure WAS going to work because he fully thought it would, he made the decision on that basis. YOU the PLAYER can acknowledge their lack of scientific process, but you cannot justify Joel’s decision based off of it because that’s not even something he was aware of. He only did it because it costed Ellie, fully willing to sacrifice humanity.

i can’t stand this discourse. it’s basic suspension of disbelief - the details are irrelevant, in this universe the choice was ellie or humanity. also joel believed it would work so his choice stands!

I think it's interesting that people prefer to treat the "it wouldn't have worked" as fact because it's easier to digest for them

“No you see Ellie my decision to save you was based on outside information about fungal vaccines that I had no idea about and information on the surgeon I also did not know.-“

the whole point is that we *don’t* know if it would have worked or not. ellie and joel both assume that there was a chance but nobody knew for sure. but joel took away that possibility entirely

I think the cure worked well both commercially and artistically, Robert Smith is a genius

The kind of cordyceps depicted in the game/show is already pure fantasy. Even if cordyceps mutated to work on humans, you certainly wouldn't see people in mushroom armour hurling glowy spore pods

They're desperately trying to find a way to ignore Joel's borderline abusive possessiveness over Ellie despite the games practically beating them over the head with it.

Same thing goes for people watching breaking bad. "Synthesizing the methylamine woulda been a whole lot easier" yea in reality but the writers aren't chemists and they needed a plot point

yes joel did trust the doctors but objectively speaking they WOULDN'T have made a cure and we can acknowledge that. the moral dilemma is still there because we experience it from the eyes of joel

tlou is not a story about science or zombies or even “clickers” if youre picky, it’s a story about revenge, the cycle of hate, and that the actual villains in our lives look like us and not monsters

I never played & don't participate in the fandom but I agree even in the show it was clear that the cure would have worked. I kinda thought that was the whole point. Do ppl really not get that?

I don't think it matters if the cure would have worked or not for it to have the same moral weight. All that matters is that Joel believes it would or had a chance but still decided to do what he did.

Joel isn't exactly a biologist, I don't think we can trust his judgment on this.

Actually in the game the fireflies and their scientists are portrayed as pretty incompetent, one of them got infected because he let monkeys he infected with the virus out of their cage and got bitten

the whole “they couldnt have made a cure anyway” argument to defend joel makes zero sense because how would joel have known that? the point is he chose to save ellie with the belief that it wouldve

Hard disagree. If you take your time clearing the hospital you can hear audio logs of the SCIENTISTS THEMSELVES questioning the success of such a procedure and if it can work/if the risk is worth it.

From Joel’s point of view, he is not robbing humanity. He owes nothing to humanity since humans are the ones that killed his daughter and almost Ellie. Joel was right because quite frankly humanity
