I think ppl justify Alex Consani doing it and not Awkwafina is bc they think Alex Consani is funny and Awkwafina isn’t.

People dislike Awkwafina because that’s not her real accent. She doesn’t actually talk like that, it’s an intentional accent she put on after becoming famous.

As a trans girl that’s lives in Petaluma and knows Alex Consani personally, they’re is a large Latina population in Petaluma, and almost every white girl, I know, talks like that, or in some similar fashion with an accent. Especially because growing up most of my friends were Mexican. Also, naturally, we have deeper voices, even if we go on estrogen, and I when I’m kind of in awkward situations I try and make my voice feminine and for some reason cause I have a deeper voice it usually sounds like a blackccent or something in that realm, even though I’m not intentionally trying to put on a blackccent. And I don’t mean that I’m like throwing on random phrases, it just sounds more like how you would think I guess a blackccent would sound, and I naturally have more of a culturally diverse accent, because even though there isn’t a large population of Black people where I live, there is still a large ethnic diversity overall throughout the North Bay. I’m not saying it’s an excuse, but it may give some more insight.

There’s also overlap with blaccent and localised regional dialects. It’s not always as clear cut!

I feel like it’s also in part that Alex uses it in. A fun relatable way were as awkwfina is “cringey” and it’s relying ON the accent to be funny

I think going off the gen-z thing part of the issue is that generational gap due to social media. Gen-z consistently gentrifies a lot of AAVE terms that they don't know how to use so seeing a white

Bc Alex is being herself and funny and the other one used it in a way that made people of color stereotyped. People are thinking about this stuff way to much. If it’s genuinely offensive something if it’s not then stop trying to make a problem… as long as harmful stereotypes are not being portrayed there shouldn’t be a problem

cus alex’s blaccent is somewhat reminiscent of ballroom attitude (that is also black) and her being trans just makes it culturally confusing imo. also most people don’t know history

Ty for talking about this, it’s just so cringe to me. Billie Eilish also got a pass and I never understood why. And yeah you’re right about Awkwafina! She’s cringe too but at least she’s from Queens

I think we gotta realize that not every black person speaks AAVE and not every AAVE speaker is black, it is only natural in linguistics for the slang of a language (in this case, English slang is heavily influenced and based on the African American vernacular due to the amount of overlap) to bleed into the standard form of the language and for more people to start speaking that way, not to mention the overlap between gay/queer and black slang that dates back to queer people being marginalized and confined to the same spaces as black people.
