Trump announced Thursday on Truth Social that the December 3 execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan will not be streamed, according to The Independent. "Many very good and well meaning people would rather not watch him die, through streaming, or through any other visual device," Trump wrote. "He will die, as scheduled, by firing squad, but this event will not be streamed." Just one week ago, Trump said he "absolutely" approved of the livestream. So what changed? The country spoke up, and refused to stop. Pope Leo declared the death penalty inadmissible. The head of the U.S. Catholic bishops called the plan barbaric. The archbishop for the U.S. military told Catholic soldiers to refuse to serve on the firing squad, and soldiers started filing religious exemptions. Keely Cahill Vanacker, whose father was killed at Fort Hood, went on national TV and said it was turning tragedy into entertainment. She revealed no one from Hegseth's Pentagon had even called her family. And senators from both parties lined up against it. Mark Kelly demanded Hegseth be removed. Elissa Slotkin warned the video would be used as terrorist propaganda for decades. Republicans Thom Tillis and John Curtis called it disgusting and dangerous. Trump fought it for a week. Then he folded. Hegseth wanted a spectacle. Instead, he got a lesson in what happens when Americans of every faith and party stand together. Thank you to everyone who spoke up.
