@paal.bjrndal: The rule of not planting anything in the ground until after the 17th of May does not apply for onions. You can throw them out in the winter and they will blossom in the spring. A not necesseraly wise man once told me that onions are weird and he might be right about that. Seagulls and otters dont like onion so they leave them alone over winter so they can blossom with a beautiful white ball of flowers.
