🇵🇱 On 1 August 1944 at 5:00 PM, known as W Hour, the Polish Home Army launched the Warsaw Uprising against German occupation. Around 45,000 resistance fighters attempted to liberate the capital before Soviet forces entered the city, hoping to restore an independent Polish government. The battle lasted 63 days, becoming the largest military operation undertaken by any European resistance movement during the Second World War. ⚔️ Despite severe shortages of weapons and ammunition, Polish soldiers fought street by street with remarkable determination. Thousands of teenagers served as soldiers, medics, scouts and couriers, while children as young as 10 to 12 volunteered to carry messages, transport ammunition and rescue the wounded under constant German fire. Some, including 12 year old Witold Modelski, even fought on the front lines and became symbols of Polish bravery. Their sacrifice is commemorated today by Warsaw’s Little Insurgent Monument. 🕊️ (Instytut Pamięci Narodowej⁠) 🏛️ The uprising was eventually crushed on 2 October 1944 after little effective external assistance arrived. Approximately 150,000 to 200,000 civilians lost their lives, and after the surrender German forces systematically destroyed most of Warsaw.
