He was born in Medina in the year 26 AH (646 CE) and came from one of the most powerful and aristocratic Arab families of Quraysh—Banū Umayya. His father was Marwān ibn al-Ḥakam, a cousin of Caliph ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, and his lineage traces directly back to Umayya ibn ʿAbd Shams, one of the great ancestors of the Quraysh. ʿAbd al-Malik was known for consolidating the Umayyad dynasty, centralizing power, and instituting major reforms—including the creation of a unified Islamic currency and the Arabization of administrative practices. He was a deeply influential caliph who laid the groundwork for the empire’s long-term strength. Now, if anyone has a problem with an avatar or depiction of ʿAbd al-Malik as a dark-skinned man, they should educate themselves before reacting emotionally. One of the oldest surviving illustrations of his own son, Maslamah ibn ʿAbd al-Malik—who was born to a European woman—depicts Maslamah as dark-skinned. That’s not modern reinterpretation. That’s historical artwork.
