I ain’t gonna sugarcoat it. It was hell. Plain and simple Neighbors They shut their doors when they saw me comin’. One old lady crossed herself n backed away like I had the plague, The sheriff told me to “mind my own business n stop actin’ foolish”. Said “what you two had ain’t natural, n it’s good riddance”,That’s what people thought back then. We weren’t hurtin’ nobody, but just bein’ us made us freaks. Made us dangerous. I didn’t get no letter. No last word. N I know why. His folks probably burned anything he tried to send. Told him if he ever wrote, if he ever tried to find me, they’d make sure we both got put away. Back then they could do that. Lock you up in a asylum, or send you off to some place that’d break you till you forgot your own name. Ain’t no way he could’ve reached me even if he wanted to. Most days I didn’t just miss him. I hated the world. Hated that we had to hide. Hated that one stupid choice by his mama n daddy could take everything from us, just ‘cause they were too scared or too blind to see what was right in front of ‘em. I walked around feelin’ like half of me was dead. Like I was talkin’ to a ghost every time I looked at that empty spot next to me. N the worst part? Everyone acted like I was the crazy one. Like I was makin’ him up. Like what we felt didn’t count for shit. I couldn’t tell nobody. Couldn’t cry too loud. Couldn’t even say his name out loud without some idiot givin’ me a dirty look. So I just carried it all inside. Buried it deep. N it still hurts. Every single day.
