If your cat or dog is coughing like this, it’s not just due to 2 or 3 possible causes. Coughing is not a symptom of a single disease. Veterinarians often confuse coughing in animals with asthma, but there can be dozens of different causes. 1)Heart disease 2)Asthma 3)Polyps or tumors in the ear, nose, or throat area 4)Soft palate issues (elongated or sagging palate) 5)Cancer 6)Internal parasites 7)Heartworm 8)Upper respiratory tract infection 9)Ulcer, gastritis 10)Allergy 11)Hairball 12)Foreign object 13)Fluid accumulation in the lungs 14)Bronchitis, pneumonia There are many diseases—especially in cats—that can cause coughing, but you need to consult specialist veterinarians for this issue. First, you should see an internal medicine specialist, and then a surgical specialist if needed. My cat had this kind of coughing. At first, her heart, lungs, and kidneys were examined with ultrasound, then a chest X-ray was taken—nothing was found. Blood tests (hemogram and biochemistry) were also done, and everything came back clean. Since the blood tests and heart check were normal, an endoscopy of the ear, nose, and throat area was performed under gas anesthesia. I suspected a polyp, but none was found. The cause of my cat’s severe coughing turned out to be a soft palate issue (a sagging palate). Because my cat is overweight, this condition developed, so she definitely needs to lose weight. If she loses weight, the sagging palate can gradually improve. Our surgical vet did not want to operate unless there were fainting episodes or cyanosis (turning blue), because this condition can recur over time. The priority is weight loss. If she loses weight and still has the same issue, then surgery will be considered. This surgery can be performed on animals a maximum of three times, and vets usually avoid doing it too early so that the animal still has the option later in life if the condition comes back. If you follow the path I did, you will find the correct diagnosis. However, never proceed without first checking heart health and blood values.
