The Last Days of Erap: When the Streets Spoke Louder Than Power In January 2001, the streets of Manila once again became the stage of history. After months of corruption scandals and a failed impeachment trial, thousands of Filipinos; students, workers, priests, and even politicians marched to EDSA Shrine. They were angry, betrayed, and tired of lies. President Joseph “Erap” Estrada, once loved by the masses, now faced a wave of protests calling for his resignation. The demonstrations grew by the hour, and despite government attempts to stop the rallies, people kept coming. The police and military soon withdrew their support signaling the end of Erap’s rule. On January 20, 2001, Erap left Malacañang Palace quietly. He said it was not resignation, but “leaving for the sake of peace.” Still, the people knew what happened. People Power rose once again, proving that no leader can silence a nation’s voice. #erap #edsa #peoplepower
