THE DOUBTING DISCIPLE | WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY WOMEN IN THE BIBLE: LOVED, BUT NOT EQUAL? The Bible teaches love, compassion, and that humanity was created in God's image. But when it comes to women, scripture presents a complicated picture. Genesis 1:27 says male and female were created in God's image. Yet Genesis 3:16 declares that man will rule over woman. Ephesians 5:22–24 instructs wives to submit to their husbands. 1 Timothy 2:11–12 restricts women from teaching or exercising authority over men, while 1 Corinthians 14:34–35 instructs women to remain silent in church. Why are women given restrictions that men are not? Yet the Bible also tells another story. Deborah (Judges 4–5) served as a prophet and judge. Romans 16:1–2 recognizes Phoebe's service to the church. Jesus spoke openly with women (John 4:7–27), welcomed them among his followers (Luke 8:1–3), and entrusted Mary Magdalene with announcing his resurrection (John 20:11–18). Galatians 3:28 declares that there is neither male nor female, for all are one in Christ. So how do we reconcile teachings of equality and universal love with passages that place women beneath male authority? Is this divine design, historical culture, or religious tradition preserved through scripture? And why do some religious institutions emphasize submission and silence while overlooking examples of female leadership? Historical context matters, but it doesn't make difficult questions disappear. If love is universal, why do the rules seem different depending on whether you were born male or female? Read the passages. Examine the context. Question the interpretation. FAITH SHOULD NEVER BE AFRAID OF AN HONEST QUESTION.
