at twenty i knew a boy who drove forty minutes to bring me soup when i was sick, then sat in my driveway and couldn’t think of one thing to say. he handed me the container through the car window and said “it’s chicken” and left. and i stood there holding it like it was a love letter. that was us. he never said he missed me, but he’d show up at my job at closing time and pretend he was just in the area. he didn’t say sorry after we fought, he’d just fix something, like my bike chain or the loose handle on my car door. i got so good at translating him. “you good?” meant i’ve been thinking about you all day. a thumbs up meant i love you. a three-word text after two days of silence meant he’d been sitting with something too heavy to lift. my friends would ask how things were going and i’d explain him like a tour guide at a museum. no, you don’t get it, he had a really hard childhood. no, he does care, you just have to know how to look for it. and i did know how to look for it. that became my whole job. i took every crumb he gave me and baked it into a meal. i told myself i was the only person who understood him, and i think i loved that title more than i want to admit. then one night in august i got some really bad news and called him, shaking. and he listened, and it was quiet for a long time, and he said “damn.” and then “that sucks.” i waited. that was all he had. i sat on my bathroom floor and realized i’d been writing both sides of this relationship in my head for a year. every sweet thing he’d ever said to me, i had said for him. here’s the part it took me years to be fair about. he wasn’t a villain. he was a boy nobody ever taught, and the soup was real, and i believe he felt everything he couldn’t say. but i was a girl who had learned that being easy to love meant needing almost nothing, and we fit together perfectly in the worst way. he never had to learn, because i never made him. i never asked for more, because i was scared of the answer. i think about him sometimes. i hope somebody taught him the words eventually. i hope i taught myself that understanding someone isn’t the same thing as being loved by them. that was the tension between us, the boy who didn’t know how to express himself and the girl who tolerated the bare minimum to prove she understood him. we were both so quiet about it. the soup really was good, though.
