People walking out from between cars is always a risk. It may have been safer to be further out to the right. If it's not safe to be further out, you'd have to lower your speed so you can stop

Someone did this to me once and I slammed on from 20ish, dropped the bike (landed stood on my feet), I then proceeded to laugh like a madman, the guy then looks at me scared and confused

That's exactly how I broke my arm! But in my instance, the woman ran through the traffic in front of me, so I broke but bike slipped and I landed on my arm. Luckily very little traffic on other side
