@dr.lisa.dpt: The way I treat ITBS has changed a TON, and luckily it’s for the better- no more “stretching” the ITB or massage with temp relief. Fast forward a couple years of being a PT and I realized the research for ITBS had changed a lot and there’s a lot more to addressing it than just pain management. The goal of my “new” way of treating it is to get to the source of the pain: someone with ITBS could have poor single leg stability, weakness in their glute max and glute med, hip tightness, and poor muscle contracting timing causing dominance in certain muscles. If I’m experiencing pain/stiffness in the TFL and glute med and max after running could this also be ITBS even if I’m not directly experiencing much knee pain? And would these exercises fix this?
