On January 2, 2016, 21-year-old American college student Otto Warmbier was preparing to leave North Korea after visiting the country as part of an organized tour. Before he could leave, North Korean authorities detained him at Pyongyang International Airport. Officials accused Otto of attempting to steal a propaganda poster from a restricted area of the hotel where his tour group had been staying. North Korean authorities presented surveillance footage and other evidence they said connected him to the incident. Weeks later, Otto appeared before cameras and confessed to taking the poster, apologizing and asking to be allowed to return home. In March 2016, a North Korean court convicted him of committing a “hostile act” against the state. He was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. After his sentencing, Otto largely disappeared from public view. More than a year later, his family learned that he had suffered a catastrophic brain injury and had reportedly been unresponsive for much of his imprisonment. North Korea claimed Otto had contracted botulism, taken a sleeping pill and never awakened, but American doctors later said they found no evidence of active or previous botulism. After approximately 17 months in North Korean custody, Otto was medically evacuated back to the United States in June 2017. Doctors found that he had suffered extensive brain damage consistent with a prolonged loss of oxygen to the brain. Exactly what caused that injury was never determined. Otto never regained meaningful consciousness. On June 19, 2017, just six days after returning home, Otto Warmbier d*ed at the age of 22. What happened to him during those 17 months in North Korean custody remains disputed. #analoghorror #criminalcase #truecrime #northkorea #unsolvedmysteries
