a Swiss institution and Microsoft separately found that AI reduces critical thinking skills. we should not be using it for hardly anything

I flatly refuse to engage with ai and everyone around acts like I’m being some kind of Luddite!

When I talk to people about how llms work, I describe it as a more advanced way of repeatedly pressing the middle option of your keyboards 'suggested next word'. Will you get something that makes sense? probably. should you proofread and validate the result?? 100%

This reminds me of the whole “you won’t always have a calculator in your pocket” when doing those timed multiplication tables thing.

there's a weird tendency among ai boosters to both use & describe them in an almost oracular way. it's like they're creating a secular god to bring order to the high chaos state of reality. very weird

I absolutely agree, but counterpoint: cover letters. Chatgpt and it's ilk should be relegated to the most useless, trite and rote of all writing.

i really try but i cannot understand for the life of me why people are willingly become dependent on these things and why they don't WANT to think. it's killing me to hear about 😭

Yeah, the AIs don’t think. We do. But your critiques seem to be more about how the toolmakers might misunderstand and misuse their tools than about the tools. I’ve been using the DeepSeek as an interactive, summarizing encyclopedia that can analyze things in seconds and even help me think more critically. We still gotta watch our own biases and verify its claims but it’s a useful learning tool.

if it was used to do data processing and other grunt work so humans have more time to be creative and innovative, fine. but so many people are trying to do the opposite of that

It doesn't have to be intelligent. All that matters is if it produces good results, which it really, really does. Especially when used correctly or specialized. The chatbots are toy-like and not the point anyway. GPT is like Ask Jeeves.

I see takes every day so stuck on litigating “intelligence” semantics without taking the threat seriously. “The empire is building a Death Star!” “Overhyped, not a Star, it’s not even a moon.”

I don’t disagree with you but there’s also an opportunity to learn from the wording/work you ask AI to complete. You need to be able to assess the output to ensure its accuracy/appropriateness. 1/2

My 2 cents on student use of AI: Ed/particularly at the college lvl, has needed a major realignment for some time. Students have been paying thousands for courses/materials that don’t further their ed

“It’s just completing the next word” yes technically, but why is that not intelligence. To the degree it’s true of AI, it’s essentially the same for humans. Why does the underlying mechanism matter?

I get the skepticism, however as a dyslexic professional, AI is a total game changer. Chathpt has enabled me to get the scaffolding of what I need done and then add in my voice. Reading and writing doesn’t equal intelligence, critical thinking about one’s reading and writing does.

I liken to a very convincing parrot. You can have a conversation with a parrot, it might sound real, but it’s just pattern recognition. The parrot has no idea what it is saying, just hears patterns.
