It’s said that Khwarezmian forces killed a Mongol trade envoy, consisted of over 100 people. Genghis couldn’t let this slide, and invaded in 1219. This wasn’t a sweeping victory, but the mongols decisively debilitated Khwarezm in a few years. It was genghis’s long gone successor, Hulegu Khan, that would finish the Persian conquest, and found the Ilkhanate.
