@adamsautismfamily: Adam had another major meltdown in the car. One of the hardest challenges for a parent when something like this happens is staying as calm as possible. I used to lose my cool and approach it with rage and anger; raising our voice and scolding him will only make things worse. When an autistic child has a full-blown meltdown, they are not able to listen and reason. Over time I learned to just allow him to go through the ordeal on his own. What we can do is try to secure a safe space for him and wait for signs to intervene calmly. Try to meet them where they’re at. Indeed, it's easier said than done. And of course, not every autistic person is the same. Please do not watch this and assume all individuals on the spectrum behave like my son. Each child has their own triggers and coping mechanisms, which can vary widely even within the spectrum. Understanding these signs has become crucial in our approach to managing his meltdowns effectively. Nonetheless there will always be a risk that something may go wrong. Ultimately, patience and experience are our greatest tools in navigating these challenging moments. And one last thing, say a prayer everytime.
