@icuboy_meded: 🫁INTERSTITIAL LUNG DISEASE (ILD) 101🫁   What is ILD? 🤷‍♂️   ILD is also known as diffuse parenchymal lung disease🔍   It is called this because it affects the interstitium aka the space between the alveoli (or air sacs) including connective tissue & it affects the parenchyma (the functional tissue of the lungs responsible for gas exchange)   This is in contrast to diseases that predominantly affect the airways (ie asthma) or the pleura (the lining of the lungs ie pleural effusions or empyema)🚨   ILDs can present rapidly or chronically over many years and are a broad group of heterogeneous diseases🧩   It is best to categorize ILDs based on whether the cause of the scarring and inflammation is KNOWN or UNKNOWN   KNOWN causes of ILD include:📝 -Exposures – smoking, radiation, inhaling inorganic substances -Drugs – amiodarone, methotrexate, bleomycin -Connective tissue disease – rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma   UNKNOWN causes of ILD include:📝 -sarcoidosis -idiopathic interstitial pneumonias -idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis Hypersensitivity pneumonitis is another bucket of ILD that can be caused by either known or unknown substances Binge my content for all things critical care & follow along for more! 😃🙌 #medicine #med #doctor #ems #nurse #medstudent #medicalstudent #paramedic #RN #NP #MD #RT #teaching #education #emergency #physician #newnurse #residencylife
