Many men feel hyper-aware of how their actions might be perceived, especially in a society where male involvement with children can be unfairly scrutinized. They may fear that others (or even themselves) might interpret their care as inappropriate—even if it’s purely nurturing and innocent.

I feel like someone who feels that this means you should leave someone is being super inconsiderate. People can suffer from intrusive thoughts and OCD. It doesn’t mean they actually want to harm someone. I have MCAS and I have taste and smell hallucinations at times. I now know that it’s because my mast cells are ramming into taste buds and such. At one time, I didn’t know this and was worried about it being a brain tumor. If you research brain tumors, you can find all sorts of weird things about them (example: some people are sex offenders because of brain tumors, and when the tumor is taken out, the behavior goes away). When I was worried that my taste and smell hallucinations might be a brain tumor, I was suffering from intrusive thoughts knowing what tumors can do. I also had brain tumors in the family because my mom’s dad had brain tumors. I got an MRI done of my brain because I was so concerned about it (which was somewhat of an unfortunate decision because I didn’t have them, contrast dye can cause serious side effects for MCAS patients, and I later learned I could have just taken a medicine that would have calmed down the olfactory and gustatory hallucinations)…but saying I’m a bad person because I was suffering from intrusive thoughts is effing ridiculous. I was also trying to get help, but I was working with a medical system that often knows next to nothing about my condition. I also was reluctant to talk about it with a therapist because I knew multiple people that had opened up to the wrong person about medical issues and suicidal ideation (which I also had) and abused in mental hospitals. Stupid videos (like this one) only make people with intrusive thoughts feel more judged. Also, I recognize that intrusive thoughts may not be the only reason someone reacts this way. There’s a ton of underlying concerns that could make someone feel uncomfortable doing this. It’s a place to figure out what’s going on underneath the thoughts, and it’s best not to make assumptions…but to all to the negative and judgy comments on here, you show people that their concerns about reaching out for help are valid.
