Military commissaries across the United States suddenly started losing refrigeration around the same time — forcing stores to throw away food and leaving military families without normal access to meat, milk, eggs and frozen groceries. And right now, the Pentagon won’t say why it happened. More than a half-dozen military installations have publicly confirmed refrigeration outages. The affected locations span multiple military branches and multiple states. At Fort Huachuca in Arizona, officials announced that ALL of the commissary freezers went into defrost mode overnight. Their announcement was pretty blunt: All of the frozen food spoiled. The commissary stayed open, but shoppers could not buy frozen food. Produce and additional refrigerated sections were also affected. At Fort Irwin in California, the commissary initially told shoppers that eggs and milk would not be available. Then the restrictions expanded. The store eventually announced that only dry goods would be available while technicians worked on the refrigeration system. Naval Station Newport also announced that its commissary would be limited to dry goods, with the deli, sushi bar and grab-and-go areas unavailable. Other bases have reported similar problems. And here’s where the story gets really interesting. The military community page U.S. Army WTF Moments says reports it received indicate that as many as 18 commissaries may have been affected. The Pentagon has confirmed what it calls a “possible refrigeration disruption” at Defense Commissary Agency stores. But officials have not said exactly how many commissaries are affected. They haven’t said whether all these outages are connected. And they haven’t explained what caused them. Now, because some commercial refrigeration systems can use centralized or remote monitoring, people online are already asking whether this could have been some kind of cyberattack. There is currently NO confirmed evidence of that. The Pentagon says it would be inappropriate to speculate about the cause while officials are still dealing with the disruption. But military families deserve an answer. The commissary is not some luxury convenience. It is a military benefit designed to help service members, retirees and their families save money on groceries. So when families walk into a commissary and suddenly find empty freezer cases, no meat, no milk and no eggs, that directly affects their household budget. And we are not talking about one broken refrigerator at one installation. We’re talking about multiple military commissaries, across several states, experiencing similar failures within the same general time period.
