Mom passed in 2023. She had a separate Will. Common law for 30 years. never saw her Will but think everything went to stepdad and when he passes to be dispersed. He has now changed his will. 🤷🏼‍♀️

My mom in her will wanted her life insurance to be split between us 3 kids , brother was beneficiary. Turns out he had no obligation to pay us out and never did

Do wills but you can add people eg 40% toTom then 10% to each of your kids etc.. then all those you wish to leave something to you can

Were you able to use a notary for such contracts or did you have to hire a lawyer and if so, was it in BC or Alberta ?

My married at 65 and left everything to his wife. They had reciprocal wills. She remarried a year later and now he benefits from everything my dad worked for.

Need testamentary contracts so neither first family is not disinherited.

If I understand, Tom is leaving you his pension if he passes before you? Have you reciprocated that in anyway? I'll do that for my wife, but she doesn't really have that option, financially.

My father remarried at 60 - everything was kept separate. That just makes sense. I will do the same if I ever get married again. (LOL - not a chance in heck!!)

TFSAs and RRSPs have beneficiary designations but bank accounts and non registered accounts dont. You would need your Will to define the beneficiary of those in your Will.
