@koreanwithrei: It’s crazy how quick people are to throw around the word “Koreaboo” without even understanding what it really means. Just because someone likes K-pop, watches K-dramas, enjoys Korean entertainment, is learning the Korean language, or wants to travel to Korea — that does not make them a Koreaboo. Appreciating a culture and being genuinely interested in learning about it is not the same as fetishizing it or trying to become Korean. Meanwhile, some of the same people who call others Koreaboos have usernames and profiles that are highly inappropriate and sexualize K-pop idols — and that’s way more disrespectful than someone simply learning the language or enjoying the culture respectfully. A Koreaboo is someone who disrespects their own culture, wants to erase their identity to “be Korean,” and sees Korea as some kind of fantasy land filled with perfect people — often thirsting over Korean men or women in a shallow way. That’s not what most learners or fans are doing. Most of us are here because we love the language, respect the culture, and want to connect with it in a deeper, more meaningful way. Stop misusing the term and making people feel ashamed for learning Korean or enjoying Korean content.
