I've had multiple plants die as a result of bottom watering, never killed one top watering though. it's just not for me.

I was bottom watering and having so much success until I heard someone say something that made me see if top watering was worth the hype. I almost instantly got fungus gnats and have been fighting them for at least a month or two. I'm back to bottom watering now.
